Search for a contact

Search for a contact by email address, mobile number, or domain.

Written by Gareth Burroughes

You can search for contacts by their email address, mobile number, or domain. Each search type matches in a different way:

Search by

Matches

Example

Email

Email addresses that start with your search term

jane finds jane.smith@dotdigital.com

Mobile number

Mobile numbers that start with your search term

4477 finds every number beginning 4477

Domain

Contacts whose domain exactly matches your search term

dotdigital.com finds every contact at that domain, but dotdigital finds none

You can't search by name, Contact ID, or any other data field. If you want to group contacts by a data field, such as first name or company, a segment might suit you better. Learn more in Create a segment.

Before you start

  • Required permissions
You must be an account owner or have the following user permission:

    • Contacts

Search contacts

  1. Go to Audience > Contacts.

  2. In the Search field, expand the left side drop-down menu and choose the identifier type you want to search by:

    • Email

    • Mobile number

    • Domain

  3. Enter your search term in the text field. If you're searching by domain, enter the full domain without http:// or www, for example, dotdigital.com.

  4. Select the search icon or press Enter on your keyboard. Contacts matching your search are listed, with their Email status, SMS/MMS status, and WhatsApp status shown for each one.

  5. If you want to perform additional actions on the contact or list of contacts, then select the check box for the contact and expand the More actions drop-down menu.

To see a contact's details and activity, select their email address to open their Single customer view.

Learn more in Single customer view.

Find a contact that doesn't appear in your search

Contact search shows only the contacts in Audience > Contacts. If a contact you expect to find doesn't appear:

  • Check your search term
Email and mobile number searches match from the start, so enter the beginning of the address or number. Domain searches need the full domain.

  • Check your suppressions
Suppressed and unsubscribed contacts don't appear in contact search. Go to Audience > Suppressions to search for them. Learn more in Manage suppressed contacts and domains.

  • Check the recycle bin
Deleted contacts stay in the recycle bin for 30 days, and you can recover them from there. Learn more in Use the recycle bin.
