Convert contacts in Marketing to new customers in Shopify

Keep your lists up to date, accurate, and consistent with your Shopify store.

You can use the Shopify program webhook to convert existing Marketing contacts to new customers or subscribed customers in Shopify. You can also choose to update the email marketing consent of customers who already exist in your store, to keep consent consistent between Shopify and Marketing. This is useful if you're collecting new contacts directly into Marketing.

If you’re using Marketing signup forms or Surveys, pages, and forms, you can enrol contacts who submit the form directly into a program which passes your new contacts back to Shopify.

The webhook supports the following Shopify customer fields for a newly added contact:

  • Email

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Accepts marketing

These fields use the mapping that’s defined in the Field mapping area of your Shopify connector. You must ensure that these fields are created and mapped. If they aren't, new customers aren't created.

Once your store is connected, you can find the Shopify webhook node in the program builder in the Webhooks section of the left side menu.

Configure your webhook

  1. Go to Automation > Programs and create a new program or edit an existing one.

  2. Drag the Shopify program webhook node onto the program builder canvas.

  3. Select the node to access its settings.

  4. For Accepts marketing, select Yes or No.
By default, this is set to Yes. If the contacts you enrol haven't opted in to your marketing, select No.

  5. To update the email marketing consent of customers who already exist in Shopify, turn on Update existing.
This is off by default. When it's off, existing customers aren't changed.

  6. Select Apply.

  7. Once you're happy with your program, select Activate.
When a contact reaches the node, they're added as a customer or subscribed customer in your store. If you turned on Update existing, the email marketing consent of customers who already exist in Shopify is updated.

Existing customers

What happens when a contact's email address already exists in Shopify depends on the Update existing option:

  • Off (default) - the existing customer is ignored. Nothing is added or updated.

  • On - the customer's email marketing consent is updated. Other fields, such as first name and last name, aren't updated.
