Understand the two-way sync from Marketing to Shopify

Learn what information is synchronised from Marketing to Shopify through the two-way sync feature.

Written by Gareth Burroughes

The Shopify connector supports the bi-directional synchronisation of certain fields due to its two-way sync feature. By default, two-way sync is disabled.

When two-way sync is disabled, Marketing won’t update your customer’s email marketing consent in Shopify if they unsubscribe from a campaign.

Synced contact data fields

You can sync the following contact data fields only when you enable two-way sync and map the fields in Marketing. The only exception is Subscriber status, which syncs automatically.

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Phone number

  • Note

  • Tags

  • Shipping address (default address)

  • Email marketing consent

When a customer unsubscribes through Marketing, their email marketing consent in Shopify changes to unsubscribed, and the date it was updated changes to the date of the change.

If the customer resubscribes through Marketing, this status change doesn't sync to Shopify. The Marketing status in Shopify stays UNSUBSCRIBED.

Enabling two-way sync can overwrite Shopify data with blank values

If a mapped contact data field is cleared in Marketing, that blank value syncs to Shopify and overwrites the existing data. Before enabling two-way sync, make sure your field mapping is accurate and your contact data is complete.

Enable or disable two-way sync

  1. In Marketing, go to Connect > Shopify.

  2. Find the Contacts section.

  3. Select Yes to enable or No to disable the Enable two-way sync feature.

  4. Select Save.

Synchronisation details

  • If a change happens in either Shopify or Marketing within the sync window, the data comes from the updated platform. However, if a change occurs in both platforms, in the same sync window, then Shopify takes priority, and the data comes from Shopify.

  • Marketing syncs in stages; historical data isn’t synchronised. If a customer doesn't exist in Shopify, the two-way sync won’t create the customer during synchronisation.

  • Blank values are treated as valid data updates. If a mapped field is cleared in Marketing, the corresponding field in Shopify is also cleared.
