Use this article if your MCP client can't connect to the Dotdigital Marketing MCP server, or if the results you get aren't what you expect.
To set up a connection, see Connect to the Dotdigital Marketing MCP server.
"Insufficient Permission" error
If you see "Insufficient Permission. The account does not have the required permissions to grant the (mcp:write) scope.", check the following in the Marketing account you're connecting:
The Enable MCP server for Account checkbox is selected in Settings > Access > MCP Server.
Your user has the MCP server access permission for that account.
Learn more in Manage user access and permissions.
The connection doesn't work
Check that your MCP server URL matches your account's region:
Region | MCP server URL |
Region 1 (Europe) |
|
Region 2 (North America) |
|
Region 3 (Asia Pacific) |
|
If you use the URL for a different region, the connection doesn't work.
Authentication fails in Microsoft Copilot Studio
Remove the MCP server from your agent and add it again. Check that your Copilot tenant has permission to access MCP servers.
Authentication errors in Cursor
Log out of the MCP server and authenticate again. If that doesn't fix it, sign out of your Cursor account and sign back in.
The server doesn't start in VS Code
The connection can be slow to start and to load all the tools. If the server doesn't start, or your first prompt doesn't work, restart VS Code.
A tool doesn't appear in your client
The tools you can use depend on your account access, your user permissions, and the permissions granted to your connection. If a tool in Dotdigital Marketing MCP server tools doesn't appear, reauthorise your connection. Refreshing your connection, or disconnecting and reconnecting without authorising again, doesn't grant new permissions.
If the tool still doesn't appear, check that you have the user permission for that data, then restart your client.
A send, import, or refresh hasn't finished
Some actions run in the background, so your AI tool may reply before they finish. Ask your AI tool to check the status:
Action | Ask your AI tool to check |
Sending an email campaign | The campaign's send status |
Adding contacts to lists | The import status |
Removing contacts from a list | The list removal status |
Refreshing a segment | The segment refresh status |
Importing Insight data | The Insight data import status |
Emptying or deleting an Insight data collection | The Insight data job status |
Enrolling contacts in a program | The program enrolment faults |
Results don't look right
If the results you get look incomplete or wrong, try the following:
Use the exact name of the list, segment, campaign, or form as it appears in Marketing.
When you ask about contacts, name a list or segment. Get contacts doesn't search across all your contacts.
Ask how many contacts match, rather than for a full list.
Check the figures against your reports in Marketing.
Learn what each tool can and can't do in Dotdigital Marketing MCP server tools.
