Choose lists for Shopify customers and subscribers

Choose lists for Shopify customers and subscribers.

Written by Gareth Burroughes

Sync your Shopify customers and subscribers into Marketing lists, so their data is available for segmentation and reporting.

You can synchronise both subscribers and customers between your Shopify store and lists in your Marketing account. Marketing splits this by channel, so you choose a list for email and SMS separately.

Subscribers

Subscribers are contacts who have opted in to marketing communications. Dotdigital Marketing syncs your subscribers into a list called Store subscribers by default, but you can change this.

Customers

Customers are all contacts who have purchased from, or entered their email address on, your Shopify store, whether they opted in to marketing or checked out as guests. This group includes all your subscribers, plus contacts who haven't opted in to marketing communications.

Because not all customers have opted in, Marketing doesn't sync them by default. But you can choose a list for them if you want to, for example so their purchasing data feeds the Retail and Customer dashboards in Marketing.

The subscribers and customers definitions apply per channel. A contact can be an email subscriber without being an SMS subscriber, so Marketing gives you a separate list for each.

Choose your lists

You can require double opt-in for email subscribers before Marketing adds them to your subscriber list.

  1. In Marketing, go to Connect, and under Installed integrations and extensions, select the Shopify tile.

  2. Go to the Sync data from Shopify to Dotdigital section.

  3. To require confirmed opt-in before email subscribers sync, turn on Require double opt-in for email subscribers.

  4. Expand the Sync email subscribers to drop-down menu, then select the Marketing list you want to sync your email subscribers to.

  5. Expand the Sync SMS subscribers to drop-down menu, then select the Marketing list you want to sync your SMS subscribers to.

  6. To sync your customers too, expand the Sync email customers to and Sync SMS customers to drop-down menus, then choose a Marketing list for each. You don't need to sync customers if you don't want to.

  7. Select Save.

Sync customers to a non-marketing list

Not all customers have opted in to marketing communications. If you sync customers, choose a list that you won't use for marketing sends.
